Puzzles.

Exercise and stretch your brain. A few of my favorite conundrums, most are traditional but a couple written by me -- I won't say which ones.

Date Cubes

A corporate business man has two cubes on his office desk. Every day he arranges both cubes so that the front faces show the current day of the month. What numbers are on the faces of the cubes to allow this? You must use both cubes. So the 4th day (for example) would be 04.

I know that some of you are familiar with these or have them on your own desk, but have you ever thought about what a mathematical conundrum they are?

Paddling Up Stream

You can paddle your canoe seven miles per hour. The stream flows at three miles per hour. The moment you start to paddle up stream a fisherman looses one of his bobbers in the water fourteen miles up stream of you. How long does it take for you and the bobber to meet?

Now for the fun part. Solve this without using a pencil and paper or a calculator.

What am I ? #1

I can make granite float. I see one day every two years.

What am I ?

Five Gallons

You are mixing cement and the recipe calls for five gallons of water. You have a garden hose giving you all the water you need. The problem is that you only have a four gallon bucket and a seven gallon bucket and nether has graduation marks. Find a method to measure five gallons.

Can't Make Change

What is the largest amount of modern US currency in coins you can have and not be able to make change for any US currency?

What am I ?

How Many Sheets?

You have a roll of toilet paper. The outer diameter of the cardboard tube is one and one quarter inches (I'm not using metric for this because fractions are so much fun). The outer diameter of the entire roll is four. One square sheet measures four and one quarter on a side and one five hundred and twelfth thick. How many sheets in the roll?

Open the Window

You have a garage and it has only one window. The window is one foot high, one foot wide and square. You want to let more light in but you cannot add any more windows, so you deside to modify the one you have. When finished, the window is one foot high, one foot wide and square but it lets twice as much light in. How?

No cutting down trees, moving the garage, changing the curtains or stuff like that.

Permeable Playing Card

Cut a hole in a regular playing card (poker or bridge) large enough for a regulation bowling ball to fit through. (The kind that weighs sixteen pounds and has three holes). And, yes it can be done.

Missing Link #2

Can you find the next number in the sequence below ?

347, 781, 125, 569, ?

Two Robots and Two Doors

You are trapped in a room with two doors. One leads to certain death and the other leads to freedom. You don't know which is which. There are two robots guarding the doors. They will let you choose one door but upon doing so you must go through it. You can, however, ask one robot one question. The problem is one robot always tells the truth ,the other always lies and you don't know which is which.

Find a question that no matter which robot is asked will lead you to freedom.

Find The Fake Coin

You have twelve coins. You know that one is fake. The only thing that distinguishes the fake from the real ones is that its weight is slightly different. You have a balance scale that only tells you whether or not both sides are even. Find a method to determine which coin is fake and whether it is heavier or lighter than a real one using the scale only three times.

Use only the twelve coins themselves and no others, no other weights, no cutting coins, no pencil marks on the scale... etc.
